Ban Ki-moon urges the EU to lead global climate change effort

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recently called on the EU to head up the global fight against climate change.

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recently called on the EU to head up the global fight against climate change.

In his call, he referred to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report and highlighted the human health issues at stake.

A European Commission proposal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% and increase the use of renewable energy by at least 27% by 2030 is currently being considered by EU leaders, with a decision due in October.

Ban Ki-moon pressed the EU to decide on the targets as soon as possible, ahead of the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris. At this meeting, it is expected that the world’s leaders will finish negotiations on a major climate agreement.
