Patients and healthcare professionals have shared their perspectives on the introduction of new spirometry equations.
The Global Lung Function Initiative has developed a unified and global approach for the interpretation of spirometry results. Spirometry is a test of how well you can breathe and can help in the diagnosis of different lung diseases.
The article, published in the ERS magazine Breathe, shares experiences of spirometry testing and explains why the new equations are so important.
Diana Bilton, Head of Adult cystic fibrosis unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, explains that the new equations have ‘ensured that spirometry test measurements are consistent from childhood into adulthood, without a step change. It has also made interpreting a test a lot easier.’
Marian, mother of two children with cystic fibrosis says of the new equations, ‘Now, when we looked at spirometry results, they suddenly became more relevant and personalised to my children.’
Find out more about the new equations in the Global Lung Function Initiative report‘, also published in this month’s Breathe.
