EXPLAIN-IT Congress Symposium: Importance of the exposome in prevention and treatment of chronic lung diseases

During the International European Respiratory Society Congress in Amsterdam, EXPLAIN-IT organised a very well-attended symposium (Sunday 26 September 2025) on the role of the exposome in chronic lung diseases.

The overarching aims of this symposium were to:

Define the exposome landscape and its possible risks for human respiratory health;
Clarify what is already known about the role of the exposome in the development of chronic lung diseases and remaining knowledge gaps;
Discuss how the exposome plays an important role in the prevention and early onset of chronic lung diseases;
Elaborate on how measures to reduce exposome involvement might be useful to treat chronic lung diseases.

These aims were discussed by experts in the field – the majority are also actively involved in EXPLAIN-IT: Anne Johannessen (co-chair and WP2 lead), Erol Gaillard (co-chair and WP3B lead asthma), Hsiao-Chi Chuang and Nikoleta Bizymi (WP3B lead ILDs). Afterwards, an engaging panel discussion with active participation from the audience took place during which inspiring questions and interesting suggestions for the near future of EXPLAIN-IT were shared.
