Let’s celebrate together: the JARED project has just reached Milestone MS15, a significant step in its mission to combat chronic respiratory diseases across Europe!
We are strengthening respiratory health — one step at a time.
JARED’s Coordination Team is pleased to announce the successful completion of Milestone MS15, marking a key achievement within Work Package 6 of the Joint Action.
Led by the Warsaw Medical University team, the survey set out to better understand how primary and secondary health care professionals across Europe share responsibilities in the management of chronic respiratory diseases (CRD) such as asthma and COPD. The questionnaire explored diagnostic practices, treatment pathways, resource availability, e-health use, and barriers affecting patient access to timely and effective care.
A total of 312 professionals completed the survey in full. As a result, the milestone requirement — at least 20 valid responses from 10 EU Member States — has been significantly outperformed, with robust participation from Portugal, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Lithuania, Spain, Italy, Finland, Latvia and Croatia, alongside additional responses from other countries. This broad engagement enabled a detailed international comparison of how CRD care is organized at both primary (PHC) and secondary (SHC) levels.
Findings of this survey highlight a substantial diversity across Europe. Many respondents indicated that the division of tasks between PHC and SHC is not always clearly defined, and formal regulations are often lacking. Several systemic challenges emerged, including delayed diagnosis, long waiting times, and uneven integration of digital tools into routine care.
The completion of MS15 provides an essential evidence base for next steps. The insights gathered will support the development of recommendations aimed at optimizing the division of responsibilities between PHC and SHC, reducing barriers to early diagnosis and treatment, and strengthening CRD management wherever possible. This milestone therefore marks a meaningful progress toward more coherent, efficient and patient-centred respiratory care systems in the EU.
