JARED’s Coordination Team is pleased to announce the successful achievement of MS26, marking the completion of a comprehensive literature review on health literacy in chronic respiratory diseases, including the identification of measurement tools and interventions designed to improve health literacy.
This milestone represents an important step towards strengthening the evidence base for patient-centred respiratory care. By systematically reviewing the available scientific literature, the project has mapped how health literacy is assessed in people living with chronic respiratory diseases and explored how it influences disease management, health outcomes, and quality of life.
The report also examines interventions developed to improve health literacy and support patients in managing their condition. These include educational programmes, self-management initiatives, digital tools, and communication strategies designed to help patients better understand health information, adhere to treatment, and navigate healthcare services.
The findings confirm that health literacy plays a crucial role in the everyday management of chronic respiratory diseases. At the same time, they highlight the diversity of existing assessment tools and intervention approaches, underlining the need for further harmonisation and evidence-based implementation across healthcare settings.
Milestone 26 will provide valuable guidance for the next stages of the JARED Joint Action. The knowledge generated through this work will help identify the most suitable health literacy tools, inform future interventions targeting vulnerable populations, and support the development of more effective, patient-centred respiratory care across Europe.
MS26 demonstrates that improving respiratory health goes beyond clinical treatment alone. Building patients’ knowledge, confidence, and ability to make informed decisions is essential for achieving better health outcomes and reducing inequalities in respiratory care.
