The European Respiratory Society have launched a new webinar panel discussion entitled ‘Usefulness of chest CT scan in the management of difficult-to-treat and severe asthma’.
The webinar, aimed at clinicians, trainees or clinical researchers, featured Prof. Dr Florence Schleich (Liège, Belgium), Dr Apostolos Bossios (Stockholm, Sweden) and Prof. Arnaud Bourdin (Montpellier, France).
The use of chest CT scan in the management of difficult-to-treat or severe asthma has to be clarified. In patients with uncontrolled asthma, chest CT can help to identify comorbidities such as bronchiectasis or help the respiratory physician in diagnosing ABPA or EGPA. In patients who remain poorly controlled, despite maximal therapy, including targeted treatments, chest CT scans might highlight the presence of mucus plugs and the involvement of the small airway disease (air-trapping).
