On 27 February, EIBIR hosted a session session during the ESR conference on “Recent developments in lung cancer screening (LCS) in Europe (SOLACE project)”. During the session, attendees had the opportunity to hear importantupdates from the project.
Project coordinator, Professor MD Joanna Chorostowska-Wynimko gave an overview of the project and talked about its most recent achievements. She highlighted different stages of the activities in the pilot countries, including the recruitment of individuals, the materials developed to reach out to them, the guidelines, as well as the latest developments in Poland.
Professor Dr Med Jens Vogel-Claussen presented the lessons learned from the HANSE trial that took place in Germany. He talked about the trial recruitment, risk assessment and registration processes and the final results of the study.
Mario Silva, MD, PhD shared details of the ESTI position paper on nodule management. He presented on the risk estimation of individual nodules, the role of imaging features of malignancy and the advantages and limitations of volumetric measurement and volume doubling time.
The new lead of SOLACE, Dr. Anna Kerpel-Fronius, MD, PhD, shared insights on the radiologists’ perspective when it comes to lung cancer screening, and more specifically, the use of software for nodule detection and characterisation and the special requirements of quality assurance measures.
Dr Med Viktoria Palm also spoke ]about the workload of radiologists and radiographers. She presented the SOLACE survey, “Impact of Lung Cancer Screening on Health Care Workers in Radiology.”
Project coordinator and Work Package 7 leader, Professor Helmut Prosch, MD, was the final speaker,highlighting the need for training programmes for all disciplines involved, the curriculum of a radiology training programme, and the potential role of the European Lung Cancer Screening Alliance.
A panel discussion concluded the event, which focused on the current and future role of artificial intelligence in lung cancer screening.
