NEXUS is a new global partnership of leading universities, public organisations, and patient groups dedicated to tackling the urgent health challenge of non-exhaust air pollution.

Funded by the UK Medical Research Council, NEXUS brings together experts across disciplines – from aerosol science and toxicology to epidemiology, data science, and health policy to investigate the impacts of brake, tyre, and road wear emissions.

🧩 Project coordination: A consortium of 17 academic partners and 8 partner organisations/industry partners.

🔍 What’s the goal? With exhaust emissions falling worldwide, these unregulated non-exhaust particles now pose a growing threat to human health and the environment. Over the next five years, NEXUS will build research capacity, strengthen international collaboration, and deliver world-class evidence to inform policies that protect people and the planet.

NEXUS will

  • Include transdisciplinary expertise – from aerosol science, toxicology, to epidemiology, big data science, public expertise and health policy change.
  • improve infrastructure and research capacity
  • deliver outstanding research to guide health policy and regulation to protect people and the environment

🗓️ Timeline: September 2025 – August 2030

🤝 Our role: Lungs Europe will support the project in Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement, Priorities Setting, Communication and Dissemination.

The aim of this WP is to identify knowledge gaps in the field of NEEs associated with combustion and electric vehicles (EVs) and other alternative transport modes, and to develop a strategic framework to address these gaps. This will involve integrating stakeholder view to ensure a comprehensive and actionable approach throughout the network lifetime.
