Lungs Europe partnered project RESPIRE-EXCEL receives award for training future lung health scientists

A project aimed at transforming the treatment of asthma and COPD has been awarded funding from the European Union’s key programme for research and innovation. The funding will allow the project to create a PhD training programme for scientists working in the field of long-term lung conditions.

The RESPIRE-EXCEL project aims to seek patient and professional insight, with the aim of improving patient care. Traditionally, the treatment of these common long-term lung conditions has been based on a “one-size-fits-all” approach. RESPIRE-EXCEL aims to bring in personalised forms of care and allow treatments to be tailored to the individual. It will work towards this aim by developing a PhD training programme, that will shape the next generation of asthma and COPD researchers.

ERS, ELF and Lungs Europe are involved in RESPIRE-EXCEL as consortium partners to provide professional and patient insight, with the shared aim of transforming patient care. The project has three main objectives:

  • Look at how asthma and COPD begin in the body
  • Find ways to better identify the conditions
  • Support new treatments

Project Coordinator, Prof. Martijn Nawijn, said “The contributions of ERS, ELF and Lungs Europe are critical for the patient-centered training program of RESPIRE-EXCEL, for securing patient involvement in the research projects of our doctoral candidates and for embedding their input in the clinical and professional respiratory community in Europe.”
