Healthy Lungs for Life is a global public awareness campaign, led by the European Respiratory Society and European Lung Foundation. It raises awareness of the importance of lung health through a range of events, projects and promotional activities.
The 10-year report celebrates a decade of work to raise awareness about lung health around the world. Impact has been seen across various areas, from EU advocacy and local lung health initiatives to public spirometry testing and educational programmes with schools across Europe.
The Healthy Lungs for Life initiative brings together a wide range of stakeholders in the field of lung health to empower individuals and communities to adopt healthier lifestyles, fostering long-term, positive changes. This includes events across the world, including in the European Parliament, encouraging people to look after their lungs. Through this collective action, we can see improved outcomes in the field of lung health for future generations.
We invite anyone who sees a role for Healthy Lungs for Life in their activities or strategy to reach out and join us in this important mission.
Looking to the future, the report also emphasises the need for continued collaboration between governments, healthcare organisations and individuals to uphold and expand efforts in improving lung health worldwide.
Maria Neira, Director of the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health at the World Health Organization (WHO), commented: “The act of breathing is fundamental to life, yet we rarely have control over the quality of the air we breathe each day. The silent threat of air pollution claims millions of lives annually and is a significant risk factor for chronic diseases, including respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, as well as cardiovascular diseases.
Air pollution affects everyone, everywhere—it penetrates our lungs, infiltrates our bloodstream, and damages other parts of the body. However, awareness brings power. Healthy Lungs for Life is an essential initiative to highlight the harmful effects of poor air quality on our health and to help prevent its devastating impacts. As communities, we must collectively demand clean air as a health and human right to protect ourselves, our children and future generations—for healthy lives on a healthy planet.”
