LungHealth4Life is an EU4Health-funded project that brings together lung function testing, health promotion and disease prevention in schools.

Led by Lungs Europe, a consortium of 6 partners plans to explore the concept that lung function testing is an innovative way to protect lung health at a population level.

A single low lung function measurement, taken at a key time-point (i.e. in childhood), is associated with a future diagnosis of chronic respiratory diseases and unhealthy ageing. Specifically, between 4 and12% of the general population do not reach a normal peak of lung function, and have higher incidence of chronic respiratory diseases, metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, and all-cause mortality in adulthood.

Collectively, these observations indicate that lung function is a global health marker, providing a window of opportunity to intervene with health promotion and disease prevention activities, particularly in childhood.

🧩 Project Coordination: A consortium of 6 partners coordinated by Lungs Europe

🔍 What’s the Goal? To assess whether lung function testing and education about health risks (e.g. smoking, air pollution) in childhood could be an effective non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention intervention by providing an opportunity to identify, address and prevent societal and health inequalities.

🗓️ Timeline: September 2024 – August 2027.

🤝 Lungs Europe’s Vital Role:

Work package 1 (WP1): Project management and coordination. The aim of WP1 is to provide a platform to smoothly run the project activities, lead and coordinate the project, decision making and governance mechanisms, ensure the fulfilment of the work plan, and facilitate effective communication among project partners and European Commission.

Work package 5 (WP5): Communications, dissemination, policy and sustainability. The aim of work in WP5 is to ensure that the key findings and recommendations from LH4L are tailored to impact the future of lung function testing and translated to efficiently target each stakeholder group.
