Take the Active Option 2022

Get active in September and help raise essential funds for our global campaign to improve lung health.

01/09/2022 - 30/09/2022

About the campaign and the event

Take the Active Option is an annual event under the Healthy Lungs for Life campaign. Healthy Lungs for Life is a global public awareness campaign run by the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and European Lung Foundation (ELF). Each year, the campaign teaches thousands of people about lung health and how to make choices in their life to positively impact their lung health and the lung health of other people.

The campaign currently focuses on four key themes:

  • Physical activity (#TakeTheActiveOption)
  • Air quality (#BreatheCleanAir)
  • Stopping smoking (#BeSmokeFree)
  • Vaccination (#Vaccinate)

As we come out of a global respiratory pandemic and look for new ways to combat the effects of climate change on our health, it is more important than ever that we help to educate people, reach new audiences and ask policy makers to focus on the right to good lung health.

This September, we are asking you to #TakeTheActiveOption and raise money to ensure that Healthy Lungs for Life has as great an impact as possible.

To celebrate going to the ERS Congress in Barcelona this year we are theming the distances on Barcelona. Either pick a distance from the list below or come up with your own distance. You can take on the challenge as an individual, or share it across a team. This year our event platform works with Strava to automatically upload your distances across September’s challenge!

  • 1.2 km – Length of Las Ramblas
  • 10km – The average distance a member of FC Barcelona runs during a game
  • 86 km – The number of columns in Parc Guell’s hall of columns
  • 142 km – The number of years the Sagrada de Familia has been under construction
  • 200 km – the total length of the city’s cycling network
  • 600 km – the distance to walk/run/cycle from Barcelona to Spain’s capital city, Madrid

How to fundraise

We are asking participants to try to raise 150 euros to go towards Healthy Lungs for Life. The easiest way to get this started is to set up the fundraising page you will be sent after you register. We will also send you tips on how to fundraise and will support you along the way. If you would like more help then please get in touch with our fundraiser by emailing katherine.wylie@europeanlung.org

Don’t worry if you are unable to reach your target. It is there as a guide and to help inspire you, but we are grateful for all donations.

Register to take part

Register to take part as a team or individual, and complete your chosen distance by walking, running, or cycling in September. You can add up the distance over the month or challenge yourself to do it in a day.
