Home » JARED Contributes to the First-Ever EU Screening Week
The first-ever EU Screening Week, held from 28 September to 4 October 2026, brought together healthcare organisations and professionals across Europe to promote prevention, early detection and greater awareness of health risks. JARED joined this European initiative, highlighting the importance of respiratory health alongside cardiovascular prevention.
The EU Screening Week mobilised all 27 EU Member States, with more than 300 organisations organising over 360 activities in more than 200 cities. Linked to the European Commission’s Know Your Numbers campaign and the Safe Hearts Plan, the initiative encouraged people to take a proactive approach to their health.
Bringing prevention into practice
As part of JARED’s contribution, the National Korányi Institute for Pulmonology in Budapest organised two screening events on 28 September and 1 October under the theme “Know Your Lung Health – Early Detection and Prevention for Better Lung and Cardiovascular Health.”
The programme combined spirometry, blood pressure measurements and personalised consultations on smoking-related risks and smoking cessation, highlighting the close relationship between respiratory and cardiovascular health.
During the two screening days, 25 people participated in the assessments. The activities also generated considerable interest in further screening opportunities, with 114 additional appointments booked for October and upcoming sessions fully booked at the time of reporting.
Participants particularly appreciated the opportunity to discuss their individual health risks with professionals. In several cases, findings led to recommendations for further medical consultation, demonstrating how screening can support early identification of potential health problems and timely follow-up.
Continuing the momentum
The lung health programme continues beyond EU Screening Week, reinforcing the importance of sustained prevention efforts rather than one-off campaigns.
Through activities such as these, JARED supports greater awareness of respiratory health, early detection and improved prevention across Europe, contributing to the shared European goal of healthier lives. Learn more about EU Screening Week: https://health.ec.europa.eu/eu-screening-week_en
