Sinan, member of the ELF Youth Group, recently shared his insights at the European Respiratory Society’s “Respiratory health risks in the era of increased climate change and natural disasters event.” He spoke about its risks to public health and how this could worsen health inequalities across Europe.
On 17 March in Brussels, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Environment and Health Committee Chair, Dr Ulrike Gehring, hosted an event on “Respiratory health risks in the era of increased climate change and natural disasters.” This event brought together experts, civil society, patient organisations and policymakers to discuss how we can prioritise public health in the face of climate change.
Sinan, who lives with cystic fibrosis (CF), highlighted the significant impact extreme weather has on his condition and overall health. He explained how heatwaves and high temperatures make breathing more difficult and worsen his condition, often leading to longer hospital stays and more frequent health issues. Sinan emphasised his concern that, as climate change progresses, extreme weather events will become more frequent and put people like him at even greater risk.
A central theme of his talk was the widening gap in healthcare access, especially for those with chronic respiratory conditions. Since moving from Turkey to Switzerland last year, Sinan has noticed differences in the availability and quality of treatment for his condition. In Turkey he experienced long delays before being diagnosed with CF and treatment options were limited. However, in Switzerland, he found that healthcare professionals have a better understanding of the condition and are equipped to help him manage his condition and symptoms.
Despite these improvements, Sinan worries that climate change could place additional pressure on healthcare systems in Europe, which could worsen outcomes for patients in the future. He stressed the need for urgent action from health leaders to protect vulnerable communities, especially those already facing challenges in accessing timely and adequate healthcare.
By sharing his experiences, Sinan hopes that he can help more patients across Europe to receive the care they need and improve health for future generations.
