UN adopts global declaration recognising lung disease and access to inhalers

The United Nations has, for the first time, specifically recognised lung diseases such as asthma and COPD in its global plan to tackle long-term health conditions, highlighting the need for better care and access to essential medicines like inhalers.

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted an important new global plan to tackle noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and to support mental health. NCDs are long-term health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and lung conditions.

For the first time, lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, are specifically mentioned. This is a big step because it means governments around the world are now recognising how important lung health is and the need for better care for people living with these conditions.

A key part of the plan is improving access to essential medicines, including inhalers. Around 650 million people worldwide live with chronic lung diseases, but many cannot always get the inhalers they need. Better access can help people stay healthy, avoid hospital visits and live fuller lives.

The European Respiratory Society (ERS) and ELF have welcomed this plan. We hope governments will now turn these promises into action so patients and families can see real improvements in the care and support they receive.

ELF will continue to work with patients, healthcare professionals, and organisations to make sure access to diagnosis, care and medicines are part of national and global health plans. These issues were also highlighted by patient organisations at ELF’s Patient Organisation Networking Day, showing what matters most to people living with lung conditions.
