The European Lung Foundation (ELF) is deeply saddened by the passing of Arran Strong, who died in Portugal in July 2026 while pursuing his passion for surfing. 

Born in Spain and spending his early life between Spain, Portugal and England, Arran lived with determination and energy. Diagnosed as an infant with alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency, a rare genetic condition that can affect a person’s lungs, liver and general health, Arran did not allow his condition to hold him back. 

As a professional surfer and athlete, Arran represented GB Surfing and achieved success on the international stage, becoming the highest-placed British male surfer at both the 2024 and 2025 ISA World Surf Games. His achievements stand as an inspiration to many people living with lung conditions, demonstrating what can be accomplished through resilience, dedication and a love of sport. 

Arran was also an ambassador for the Lovexair Foundation, a patient organisation founded by his mother, Shane, to support and empower people affected by AAT deficiency and other lung conditions through digital health and education. 

Through his involvement with Lovexair, Arran helped raise awareness of rare lung conditions and encouraged others to pursue their ambitions regardless of the challenges they faced. 

Lovexair has been a valued member of the ELF Patient Organisation Network for more than 15 years and has made important contributions across many areas of ELF’s work. These have included: 

• Participating in the ELF Patient Advisory Committee 

• Member of the ELF Digital Health Working Group and the ELF Climate Change and Air Pollution Working Group 

• Partnering on the Healthy Lungs for Life campaign in Spain and internationally 

Arran’s achievements in sport and his support of the AAT deficiency community left a lasting impression on many people. We are grateful for his contribution and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at Lovexair.
