About the grants scheme

The European Lung Foundation (ELF) offers grants to support organisers of lung health awareness events that align with one or more of the Healthy Lungs for Life campaign themes.

The Healthy Lungs for Life campaign works to:

  • Raise awareness of lung health across all life stages
  • Empower individuals and communities to protect their lungs
  • Influence policy and practice to reduce the global burden of lung disease.

The campaign focuses on prevention, early intervention and education to help ensure healthier lungs for everyone.

We are particularly committed to supporting projects aimed at children and young people, recognising that building healthy habits early in life is essential for achieving positive long-term lung health outcomes.

Grant opportunities

In 2026, two types of grants will be on offer:

Impact grants

Not-for-profit organisations, patient groups and healthcare professionals can apply for a grant of up to €1,000 to support events and activities that promote lung health through Healthy Lungs for Life activities.

Enhanced impact grants

We are introducing three €5,000 grants for organisations that have previously received a Healthy Lungs for Life grant and successfully delivered impactful activities.

These larger grants are designed to support the expansion, scaling or deepening of proven initiatives, enabling recipients to reach wider audiences and achieve greater long-term impact.

Eligible activities

Activities must support one or more of the following campaign aims:

  • Air quality: increase knowledge of the impact of poor air quality on lung health and actions to reduce air pollution exposure.
  • Smoking cessation: highlight the benefits of quitting smoking for lung health.
  • Physical activity: promote the importance of physical activity for maintaining healthy lungs.
  • Vaccination: raise awareness of vaccinations to prevent lung infections.
  • Climate change: educate communities on the impact of climate change on lung health.

Requirements for grant recipients

Organisations awarded a Healthy Lungs for Life grant must:

  • Be registered as a non-profit organisation in their country of activities
  • Be able to accept a donation from a European entity
  • Display the logos of Healthy Lungs for Life, FIRS and CADSET on all promotional materials and activities supported by the grant.
  • Submit a brief summary report detailing the activities undertaken and outcomes achieved, including impact on the community and lessons learned.

After the application deadline, the ELF team will collect all applications, anonymise them and submit them to the Healthy Lungs for Life judging panel.

Grants will be awarded to applications that demonstrate clear objectives, strong community engagement, and the potential for meaningful and measurable impact, particularly among children and young people.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to FIRS and CADSET for providing the funding that makes these grants possible, and for their ongoing support of lung health initiatives across Europe.

This EPAP Live webinar took place from 12:30 to 13:45 CET on 20 February 2025 and focused on the impact of the Healthy Lungs for Life (HLFL) grants. Each year, ELF awards a series of €1,000 grants to organisations around the world to raise awareness of lung health.

The session included talks from previous Healthy Lungs for Life grant winners, who discussed their projects and the impact €1,000 can make to lung health. There was also an opportunity to ask questions in an interactive discussion.
